The La Raza Lawyers Charitable Foundation is pleased to announce the availability of the 2025 Law Student Scholarship Application. Since 1998, these grants have been awarded to Bay Area law students whose contributions to and activities in the community have encouraged and advanced the social, cultural, economic and legal equality of the underserved and underprivileged, especially those in the Latinx community.
Andrew was the driving force behind the creation of the La Raza Lawyers Scholarship Fund. It was his vision and goal to establish a self-sustaining endowed scholarship for Latino law students. His work continues and this scholarship honors his work and contribution to La Raza Lawyers Association and the legal community in general. Andrew attended Santa Clara University School of Law and was a well respected civil law practitioner in San Jose.
This scholarship was established in 2003 in honor of the late Daniel Hernandez, who was a successful criminal defense attorney, community activist, mentor and family man. He was a member of La Raza Lawyers Association for many years and, together with his wife, Jessie Serna, was a generous donor to our annual scholarship fund. Daniel attended Golden Gate University School of Law.
Established in 2017, this summer fellowship program is a three-way collaboration between La Raza Lawyers Charitable Foundation, La Raza Lawyers Association and the Katharine and George Alexander Community Law Center (KGACLC). The program was named in honor of the late Cindy Avitia who graduated from Santa Clara University School of Law, was a member of the Association, worked at KGACLC and was a highly respected immigrants' rights advocate. The law student selected for this fellowship demonstrates both financial need and a commitment to working with immigrant communities. The student receives a stipend from the Foundation to work at KGACLC for one summer providing free legal services to underserved immigrant families.
La Raza Lawyers of Santa Clara County is an unincorporated association of Latinx attorneys. The Association is dedicated to promoting diversity in both the bench and the bar of the greater Silicon Valley. The law students who receive this award demonstrate a commitment to the vision and mission of the organization through their work with the Latinx community.
